The basic concept of zero-sequence current protection

March 13 , 2022

The basic concept of zero-sequence current protection is based on Kirchhoff's current law: the algebraic sum of the complex currents flowing into any node in the circuit is equal to zero. When the line and electrical equipment are normal, the vector sum of the currents of each phase is equal to zero. Therefore, the secondary winding of the zero-sequence current transformer has no signal output, and the actuator does not act. When a fault occurs, the vector sum of the currents of each phase is not zero.

The amount of fault current causes a magnetic flux to form in the annular iron core of the zero-sequence current transformer. The tripping device switches the power supply network to achieve the purpose of ground fault protection.

Function of zero-sequence current transformer: When there is an electric shock or leakage fault in the line, the protection action will cut off the power supply. During operation, install a current transformer on each of the three-phase lines, or the three-phase wires pass through the zero-sequence current transformer together, or install a zero-sequence current transformer on the neutral line N, and use it to detect the three-phase current transformer. The current vector sum.

In a three-phase four-wire circuit, the phasor sum of the three-phase currents is equal to zero, that is, Ia+Ib+IC=0. If a current transformer is connected in three-phase four-wire, the induced current is zero at this time. When there is an electric shock accident or leakage fault in the line, there is leakage current passing through the circuit. At this time, the phasor sum of the three-phase current that crosses the transformer is not equal to zero, and the phasor sum is: Ia+Ib+Ic=I (leakage current amount)

In this way, there is an induced voltage in the secondary electromagnetic coil of the transformer. This working voltage is applied to the operational amplifier of the electronic device in the inspection part. Compared with the reserved posture current of the equipment in the nature reserve, if the posture current exceeds the posture current, even if the posture of the smart car relay, It is used to implement component tripping. The transformer connected here is called a zero-sequence current transformer. The phasor sum of the three-phase currents is not equal to zero, and the resulting current is the zero-sequence current.

The three-phase transmission line on the primary side of the zero-sequence current transformer crosses the iron core, and the secondary coil is wound on the iron core. Under normal conditions, because the three-phase current on the primary side of the current transformer is symmetrical and the vector sum is zero, it is not easy to form magnetic flux in the iron core, and there is no current in the secondary coil. When a short-circuit fault occurs in the system, the sum of the three-phase currents is not equal to zero, and a zero-sequence magnetic flux occurs in the iron core, which magnetically induces a potential on the secondary electromagnetic coil, and the secondary current flows through the automotive relay to make it act.

The current transformer and the leakage protection relay are composed of leakage and ground fault protection devices. According to the zero-sequence current transformer, the zero-sequence running current exceeding the set value is detected, and the leakage protection relay is higher than the rated operating current, and transmits the action signal, and disconnects or connects the alarm circuit.
